If someone were to say to me, this song has a bit of Rock, Pop, a Brass Section, Jazzified Saxophone, and some Gangster Rap thrown in, I would say ‘you’re mad.’ However, Sydney-siders Lime Cordiale manage to incorporate all of these very different elements into all of their songs on their EP ‘Faceless Cat’, and do you know what? It works..
This release, comprised of five tracks, is full of little gems. Each song has an upbeat vibrancy to it, accompanied by some really fun and clever lyrics. They also seem to be experts at changing tempos mid song, so each one has a surprise in store for the listener.
This unique style of music is not only catchy, it makes you want to dance!
It travels from dance floor tracks such as ‘Pretty Girl’, through to cafe style lounge tracks such as ‘Wanna Go Home’.
‘Pretty Girl’ is an upbeat track with a catchy chorus. The presence of the brass section gives the song a lift and a ‘bouncy’ quality to it. Translation – it makes you smile.
‘Make Your Mind Up’ is a song that lives up to its name, with elements of; a very Jazzy sounding trumpet, a gangster-style-rap-breakdown and a swoony smooth rock section rounding it all out. This song is great fun! ‘Wanna Go Home’ is a more stripped back basic rock/pop song, Oliver’s voice reminds me a little of Dean McGrath’s from Hungry Kids of Hungary. – Never a bad thing.
After a few listens of this EP it’s clear that Lime Cordiale are paving a way for themselves in the music scene. Although it might seem they are combining genres throughout, by the end of the EP they seem to have created a completely new genre of their own, and it suits them to a tee.
I think the industry needs more bands like these guys.
